Solution

Application of thermal expansion of solids are:-

  1. When telegraph and telephone wires are fixed between poles, they are left a little loose in summer. This is done to prevent their snapping when they contract in winter.

2. In railway tracks some space is left between successive rails. This is done to provide room for the rails to expand when the temperature rises.

3. When engineers use iron girders to make a bridge, they fix them at one end only, the other end rests on rollers. This end is then free to expand in summer and contract in winter to avoid any damage to the bridge.
