Question

Write the balanced chemical equation for the following-

(a) Potassium bromide on treatment with manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid gives manganese and potassium sulphates, bromine and water.

(b) In the preparation of phosphate fertilizers, calcium phosphate in phosphate rock is converted into phosphoric acid and calcium sulphate.

(c) Sodium nitrite is produced by the reaction of oxide of nitrogen in which the valency of nitrogen shows 2 and 4 in a solution of sodium carbonate.

Solution

(a) Potassium bromide on treatment with manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid - When potassium bromide on treatment with manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid gives manganese sulphate, potassium sulphate, bromine and water.

2KBr+MnO2+2H2SO4MnSO4+K2SO4+Br2+2H2Opotassiumbromidemanganesedioxidesulphuricacidmanganesesulphatepotassiumsulphatebrominewater

(b) In the preparation of phosphate fertilizers - When calcium phosphate reacts with sulphuric acid, it is converted into phosphoric acid and calcium sulphate.

Ca3(PO4)2+2H2SO43H3PO4+3CaSO4calciumphospahtesulphuricacidphosphoricacidcalciumphosphate

(c) Reaction of oxide of nitrogen - The reaction of oxide of nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide in which the valency of nitrogen shows 2 and 4 in a solution of sodium carbonate than sodium nitrite is produced.
