Solution

Balanced chemical equation

It is the equation in which the total number of atoms of each element in the reactants, on the left side of the equation is the same as the number of atoms in the products formed, on the right side of the equation.

An equation must be balanced in order to comply with the Law of conservation of Matter.

Law of conservation of matter

It states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.

  • When Calcium phosphate react with sulphuric acid, Phosphoric acid and Calcium sulphate is formed.

Step 1

Write the skeletal equation

Ca3(PO4)2(s)+H2SO4(l)H3PO4(l)+CaSO4(s)

Step 2

To equalize Ca, multiply CaSO4 by 3

Ca3(PO4)2+H2SO4H3PO4+3CaSO4

To equalize SO4, multiply H2SO4 by 3

Ca3(PO4)2+3H2SO4H3PO4+3CaSO4

To equalize H , multiply H3PO4 by 2

  • Ca3(PO4)2(s)+3H2SO4(aq)2H3PO4(aq)+3CaSO4(s)

Thus the equation is balanced.
