Solution

Reaction between Copper and concentrated Nitric acid:

Copper turning test: Detection of nitrate ions

  • When mixture of Copper (Cu) and conc. Nitric Acid (HNO3) is heated , it will give Copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2) , water (H2O) & Nitrogen dioxide gas (NO2) as a product.
  • The evolution of brown gas nitrogen dioxide takes place.

Balanced chemical equation :

Cu(s)Copper+4HNO3(aq)NitricAcidCu(NO3)2(aq)Coppernitrate+2H2O(l)water+2NO2(g)Nitrogendioxidegas
