Question

Write the balanced chemical equation for the following reaction.

(b) Zinc oxide dissolves in sodium hydroxide

Open in App
Solution

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an amphoteric metal oxide that reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form sodium zincate (Na2ZnO2) and water (H2O).

The skeleton reaction is as follows:

ZnO(aq)+NaOH(aq)Na2ZnO2(aq)+H2O(l)

In the above unbalanced reaction, there are 2 sodium Na atoms on the product side while 1sodium atom on the reactant side. So, to write a complete balanced reaction one must add a stoichiometric coefficient of 2 in front of NaOH. This will balance the other atoms too. Thus, the balanced chemical equation is as follows:

ZnO(aq)+2NaOH(aq)Na2ZnO2(aq)+H2O(l)
