Reaction between Ammonia and excess Chlorine:

  • When Ammonia(NH3) reacts with excess Chlorine (Cl2), it will give Nitrogen trichloride (NCl3) and Hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) as a product.
  • In this reaction, ammonia acts as a reducing agent.
  • The balanced chemical equation can be written as:

NH3gAmmoniagas+3Cl2gChlorinegasNCl3lNitrogentrichloride+3HClgHydrogenchloride

Therefore, when Ammonia reacts with an excess of Chlorine(Cl2 ), a yellow-coloured highly explosive liquid of Nitrogen trichloride is formed.
