Question

Write the balanced chemical equation to show the formation of the following salts by neutralization reaction :

NaCl

Open in App
Solution

1. Neutralization reaction

A reaction between an acid and a base that forms salt and water is called a neutralization reaction. During the reaction, the protons from the acid and the hydroxide ions from the base react to form water. Salt is an ionic compound that gives ions other than hydrogen protons and hydroxide ions in solution.

2. Formation of Sodium chloride

Sodium chloride NaCl is a salt that contains Sodium ions Na+ and Chloride ions Cl-. Therefore, it is formed by the reaction between an acid containing chloride ions like Hydrochloric acid HCl and a base containing sodium ions like Sodium hydroxide NaOH.

The balanced equation for the reaction can be given as:

HClaq+NaOHaqNaClaq+H2Ol(Hydrochloric(Sodium(Sodium(Water)acid)hydroxide)chloride)
