Question

Write the balanced equation for the following reaction.

Reaction of carbon dioxide with water.

Open in App
Solution

  • Carbon dioxide when dissolved in water imparts sour taste because of the formation of carbonic acid which in turn dissociates to produce proton (H+) and bicarbonate ion(HCO3-). It eventually results in a drop of pH increasing the acidity of the solution.
  • The balanced equation for this reaction is given as;

CO2(g)Carbondioxide+H2O(lWater)H2CO3(l)Carbonicacid(weakacid)
