Question

Write the balanced equation for the preparation of Ethene from Bromoethane

Open in App
Solution

The molecular formula of Ethene is (C2H4)

The molecular formula of Bromoethane is (CH3CH2Br)

Reaction to the formation of Ethene (C2H4) from Bromoethane (CH3CH2Br) :

  • Ethene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon whereas Bromoethane (CH3CH2Br) is an alkyl halide
  • When Bromoethane (CH3CH2Br) is heated with alcoholic Potassium hydroxide(KOH), a Water molecule is eliminated from the Bromoethane (CH3CH2Br) molecule and Ethene (C2H4) is given as the product.
  • The chemical reaction is as follows:

C2H5Br(l)Bromoethane+KOH(alc.)PotassiumhydroxideCH2=CH2(g)Ethylene+KBr(s)Potassiumbromide
