Characteristics
  • Its a young fold mountain.
  • It is aligned in the East-West direction.
  • It consist of three parallel ranges.
  • It is around 2400km long and 320 to 240km wide
  • Its extends between Kashmir in the west and Arunachal pradesh in the east.
Comparison:
Great Himalayas is the northern most range next to Karakoram and Shiwaliks is the southern most range in the Northern chain of mountains.
Average height of Great Himalayas and Shiwaliks differs significantly.
  • Great Himalayas: 6000m
  • Shiwalks: 1000-1500m
Great himalayas are known for high peaks and glaciers. E.g., Mt Everest. Shivaliks is known for Dun formation.
Both these rangeas extends from Kashmir to Arunachal pradesh.
