A permanent change in which the original substance loses its composition and properties and gives rise to one or more new substances with different compositions and properties.
Examples are the burning of paper, digestion of food, etc.
Characteristics of a chemical change:
One or more new substances are formed with composition and properties different from the original.
The change is permanent and irreversible.
An energy change is generally involved in a chemical change.
Energy is either absorbed(endothermic change) or evolved(exothermic change) during a chemical change.
Mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical change (law of conservation of mass).
