Chemical changes:

  • A permanent change in which the original substance loses its composition and properties and gives rise to one or more new substances with different compositions and properties.
  • Examples are the burning of paper, digestion of food, etc.

Characteristics of a chemical change:

  • One or more new substances are formed with composition and properties different from the original.
  • The change is permanent and irreversible.
  • An energy change is generally involved in a chemical change.
  • Energy is either absorbed(endothermic change) or evolved(exothermic change) during a chemical change.
  • Mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical change (law of conservation of mass).
