Question

Write the chemical equations for the laboratory preparation of HCl gas when then reactants are:

(A) below 200°C

(B) above 200°C

Solution

For the production of Hydrogen chloride gas(HCl), Sodium chloride (NaCl)and Sulphuric acid(H2SO4) are main reactants.

(A)The chemical equation when the reactants are below 200°C.

NaCl(s)Sodiumchloride+H2SO4aq.Sulphuricacid<200°CNaHSO4(s)Sodiumhydrogensulphate+HCl(g)Hydrochloricacid

Here, in this reaction NaClandH2SO4 are reacting with each other and producing NaHSO4andHCl as the product.

(B)The chemical equation when the reactants are above200°C.

2NaCl(s)Sodiumchloride+H2SO4aq.SulphuricacidNa2SO4(s)Sodiumsulphate+2HCl(g)Hydrochloricacid

Here, in the reaction when NaClandH2SO4 are reacting with each other then it will produce Na2SO4 and HClas the product.
