Solution

The given word equation is LeadNitrateHeatleadmonoxide+Nitrogendioxide+Oxygen.

The symbol equation of the given word equation is PbNO32HeatPbO+NO2+O2.

The balancing of the equations is done in the following steps :
Let us count the number of atoms of all the elements in the reactants and products on both sides of the equation.

Element/ionNo. of atoms of reactant(L.H.S)No. of atoms of products(R.H.S)
Pb11
N21
O3x21+2+2

Thus, the number of 'Pb' atoms are equal on both sides. At the same time, the number of 'N' and ‘O’ atoms are not equal.

On inspection, To balance the atoms put coefficient 2 before Pb(NO3)2 on the reactant side. and coefficient 2 before PbO and 4 before NO2on the product side.

The partially balanced equation may be written as

2PbNO32Heat2PbO+4NO2+O2

On final inspection, the number of atoms of all the elements on both sides of the equation is equal. Therefore, the equation is balanced.

2PbNO32(s)LeadNitrateHeat2PbO(s)LeadMonoxide+4NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide+O2(g)Oxygen
