Write the chemical formula and hence balance the following word equation:

Zinc+SodiumHydroxidesodiumzincate+hydrogen

Open in App
Solution

The given word equation isZinc+SodiumHydroxidesodiumzincate+hydrogen.

The symbol equation for the given word equation is Zn+NaOHNa2ZnO2+H2.

The balancing of the equations is done in the following steps :
Let us count the number of atoms of all the elements in the reactants and products on both sides of the equation.

Element/ionNo. of atoms of reactant(L.H.S)No. of atoms of products(R.H.S)
Zn11
Na12
O12
H12

Thus, the number of 'Zn' atoms are equal on both sides. At the same time, the number of 'H' atoms, 'Na' atoms and 'O' atoms are not equal.

On inspection, To balance the atoms, put coefficient 2 before NaOH on the reactant side.

The partially balanced equation may be written as

Zn+2.NaOHNa2ZnO2+H2

On final inspection, the number of atoms of all the elements on both sides of the equation is equal. Therefore, the equation is balanced.

Zn(s)Zinc+2.NaOH(aq.)SodiumHydroxideNa2ZnO2(aq.)SodiumZincate+H2(g)Hydrogen
