Solution

Nitrogen trichloride:

  • Nitrogen trichloride is a covalent compound that exists as a yellow oily liquid having molecular formula NCl3.
  • It is also known as trichloramine. It explodes very easily and is immiscible.
  • It is composed of one nitrogen atom and three chlorine atoms.

Molecular weight of Nitrogen trichloride: = Mass of Nitrogen atom + 3(Mass of chlorine atom)

Molecular weight of Nitrogen trichloride: = (14 + 3(35.5)) = 120.359 g mol-1

Thus, the chemical formula and molecular weight of nitrogen trichloride is NCl3(120.359 g mol-1 ).
