Solution

Definition of chemical reaction

The transformation of a chemical substance into a new chemical substance by making and breaking bonds between different atoms is known as Chemical Reaction.

Definition of the balanced equation

Balanced chemical equations possess the same number of atoms of distinct elements in reactants as well as products

Why is it necessary to balance a chemical equation

According to the law of conservation of mass, matter can neither be created nor be destroyed in a chemical reaction. This is possible only if a total number of atoms on the reactant's side equals the total number of atoms on the product side. Thus, a chemical reaction should be always balanced. must exist on the product side and reactant side of the equation.

Step 1

Representation of Chemical Reaction

  • Calcium hydrogen carbonate is heated
  • The reaction can be written as Ca(HCO3)2CaCO3+CO2+H2O

Step 2

Calculating the number of atoms on both sides of the reaction

ELEMENTSNO. OF ATOMS ON REACTANT SIDENO. OF ATOMS ON PRODUCT SIDE
Ca11
H22
C22
O66

Step 3

Balancing the uneven number of atoms on the reactants and product side

  • As the atoms of each element are not equal on both sides of the reaction we need to add stoichiometric coefficients to balance each element
  • All the elements are balanced in the equation
  • Therefore fulfilling the law of conservation of mass the number of atoms and masses remains the same on the reactant and product side

The equation becomes:Ca(HCO3)2CaCO3+CO2+H2O

ELEMENTSNO. OF ATOMS ON REACTANT SIDENO. OF ATOMS ON PRODUCT SIDE
Ca11
H22
C22
O66

The final balanced reaction is : Ca(HCO3)2CaCO3+CO2+H2O
