Solution

Part 1: Chemical name of dry ice

  • A chemical name is a systematic name given for a chemical compound.
  • The worldwide using chemical names are created and developed by IUPAC (Internation Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry).
  • The chemical name of dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2(s)).

Part 2: Dry ice - name justification

  • The name dry ice is given because it resembles ice and it sublimes directly from the solid to the gaseous phase as a visible fog when exposed to air.
  • Due to sublimation, it always remains dry because it does not change its state to liquid.

Part 3: Storage of dry ice

  • The dry ice should be stored in an insulated container under high pressure.
  • The container should be thick, to prevent the sublimation of dry ice.
  • The dry ice should be stored in ventilated rooms otherwise, the expansion of CO2(s) will cause an explosion.
  • The dry ice should not be stored in a refrigerator-freezer, because the extreme cold temperature will cause the thermostat to turn off the freezer.
