Solution
Rusting -
When a metal is exposed to the atmosphere in the presence of moisture, it reacts with Oxygen and water vapor present in the air to form its oxide which tarnishes the metal surface.
The natural process, which converts a refined metal to a more stable form, such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulphide is known as Corrosion.
The process of corrosion of Iron articles in the presence of damp air is known as rusting.
Condition for rusting -
The major conditions for rusting is Water and Air.
The different ways to prevent rusting are as follows -
Oiling and greasing: To keep metallic tools and machine parts from rusting, a thin film of oil or grease is applied to them.
Painting: There are several methods for painting iron things.
Galvanisation is a rust-prevention procedure in which a protective zinc coating is given to iron or steel products to keep them from rusting.
Tinning is the process of applying a thin layer of tin to sheets of wrought iron or steel. Because tin is a non-toxic metal, iron sheets are dipped in a molten tin in this method.
Electroplating is the technique of plating one metal onto another in order to protect it against corrosion.
Chrome plating involves electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal item.
To make stainless steel, iron is fused with nickel, chromium, or carbon in a process known as alloy formation.
