Question

Write the conditions to maximize the yield of H2SO4 by contact process?

Open in App
Solution

The main step in the preparation of H2SO4 is the oxidation of SO2 to SO3.
2SO2(g)+O2(g)2SO3(g);Hf=196.6 kJ/mol1.

The reaction is exothermic and reversible. The forward reaction proceeds with decrease in volume.

Therefore according to Le Chatelier's principle, to maximise the yield of SO3, a low temperature (720 K), a high pressure (2 bar) are required. V2O5 is used as a catalyst.
