Question

Write the conjugates of the binomial surd 12+2

Open in App
Solution

We know that the when sum of two terms and the difference of the same two terms are multiplied, the product is always a rational number.

Let us apply this concept to a binomial surd (12+2).

When we multiply this with the difference of the same two terms, that is, with (122), the product is:

(12+2)(122)=(12)2(2)2=142=184=74(a2b2=(a+b)(ab))

Since 74 is a rational number.

Hence, (122) is the conjugate of (12+2).
