Question

Write the conjugates of the binomial surds given as x2y

Open in App
Solution

We know that the when sum of two terms and the difference of the same two terms are multiplied, the product is always a rational number.

Let us apply this concept to a binomial surd (x2y).

When we multiply this with the sum of the same two terms, that is, with (x+2y), the product is:

(x2y)(x+2y)=(x)2(2y)2=x4y(a2b2=(a+b)(ab))

Since x4y is a rational number.

Hence, (x+2y) is the conjugate of (x2y).
