Question

Write the constituents of electrolyte for the extraction of aluminium.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Pure alumina melts at about 2000°Cand is a bad conductor of electricity.
  2. If fused cryolite and fluorspar is added, the mixture melts at 900°C and Al2O3 becomes a good conductor of electricity.
  3. Electrolyte: 60 parts cryolite + 20parts fluorspar + 20 parts pure alumina .
  4. Thus, the constituents of electrolyte for the extraction of Aluminium are cryolite (Na3AlF6) , fluorspar (CaF2) and alumina (Al2O3)
