Question

Write the correct order of the stages in the lifecycle of a silkworm.

Open in App
Solution

The lifecycle of a silkworm starts with the female silk moth laying hundreds of eggs.
These eggs hatch into caterpillars, also called larvae or silkworms, that feed on mulberry leaves. They start to grow in size and shed their skin several times, which is known as moulting.
After the silkworm has attained a particular size, it forms a cocoon around itself by secreting a fibre that hardens in the air to form silk.
After this, the silkworm enters the next stage of its life cycle called pupa. Inside the cocoon, the caterpillar changes into a pupa.
The further development of the pupa into moth continues inside the cocoon and then finally it emerges out as a silkmoth by breaking the cocoon.
Therefore the correct order is: Eggs Larva Cocoon Pupa silkmoth
