Solution

The degree of a polynomial is the highest of the degrees of its monomials with non-zero coefficients.
Degree of
first term $= x y = 2$
Second term $= x y^{2} = 1 + 2 = 3$
Third term $x y^{3} = 1 + 3 = 4$
Fourth term $= x^{2} y^{2} = 2 + 2 = 4$
$∴$ the highest power is $4$
$∴$ Degree of the polynomial $= 4$
