Arrangement of each type of teeth, i.e. incisor (1), canine (C). premolar (PM), and molar (M), showing a number of each type in half portion of the jaw is called dental formula.

  1. The dental formula of permanent teeth in human adults: Upperjaw=21,1C,2PM,3MLowerjaw21,1C,2PM,3M=32

(letters indicate type of teeth and figures indicate the number of teeth of each type in half portion of the jaw)

  1. The dental formula of deciduous teeth (milk teeth) in a human child: Upperjaw21,1C,2MLowerjaw21,1C,2M=20

(premolars are absent in the deciduous sets).
