Metals | Non-metals | |
(i) Nature | They are hard. | They are soft (except diamond). |
(ii) State | They are solids at room temperature (except mercury which is liquid). | They are either solids, or liquids or gases. |
(iii) Lustre | Metals are lustrous. They have shiny surfaces. | Metals are non-lustrous (except iodine). |
(iv) Ductility | They are ductile. They can be converted into thin wires. | They are non ductile. |
(v) Malleability | They are malleable. They can be converted into thin sheets by hammering (sodium and potassium are exceptions). | They are brittle. They will break down into pieces when beaten by hammer. |
(vi) Conductivity | They are good electrical and thermal conductors. | They are poor electrical and thermal conductors (except graphite). |
