An ion that consists of only a single atom with a charge is called a monoatomic ion. An ion that consists of a group of atoms with an overall charge is called a polyatomic ion.
For example - $H^{+}, {Cl}^{-}, O^{2 -}, etc$ are monoatomic ions. For example - ${OH}^{-}, {SO}_{4}^{2 -}, {NH}_{4}^{+}, etc$ are monoatomic ions.
