Dear Student, We know that iron is a metal and sulphur is a non metal, their mixture can easily be separated by wrapping the end of a small bar magnet in a paper tissue or cling film, and dipping it into a teaspoon-sized heap of the mixture of iron and sulphur on a watch glass. The iron will be attracted, but the sulfur remains on the watch glass, so iron and sulphur mixture can be separated physically. When these two elements iron and sulphur are heated together, the iron atoms combine with the sulfur atoms to make a compound known as iron sulphide. But a compound is different from elements in that it is made from the chemical union of two or more elements so this can not be separated physically, but can be separated chemically. Regards
