Solution

1. Indicators

Indicators are substances that can produce colour change in accordance with the conditions of the solution. The indicators that produce a colour change in both acidic and basic solutions are called acid-base indicators.

Examples: Litmus, red cabbage, phenolphthalein, etc.

2. Effect on red litmus

Red litmus is an acid-base indicator. It can be used to identify whether the solution's nature is acidic or basic. Red litmus turns blue in basic conditions. It does not undergo any change in acidic conditions.

The given solution is dilute HCl (Hydrochloric acid). Since HCl is an acid, red litmus does not have any effect on HCl.

Thus, with the addition of dilute hydrochloric acid, the colour of red litmus will have no change.
