Question

Write the energy transformation in a thermal power plant.

Open in App
Solution

Step1: Drawing the diagram of the situation

Thermal power plant: A power plant used to convert heat energy into electricity is a thermal power plant. Thermal power plants usually use coal to obtain heat energy.

Step2: Energy transformation

  1. Burning coal is used to obtain heat energy.
  2. The heat energy is used to boil water at high temperatures such that it is converted to steam.
  3. The steam is super heated and compressed, the compressed steam is allowed to expand with high kinetic energy at turbine blades.
  4. The turbine rotates due to the force of the blades and the mechanical energy output is obtained.

Hence, In a thermal power plant, the thermal energy is converted into electrical energy.
