Write the equation for each of the following reactions:
(i) Sulphur is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid.
(ii) Concentrated sulphuric acid is poured over sugar.
(i) When sulphur is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid, it is oxidised to sulphur dioxide:
S + 2H2SO4 → 2H2O + 3SO2
(ii) Concentrated sulphuric acid chars the sugar, leaving behind carbon as the residue:
C12H22O11 + Conc. H2SO4 → 12C + 11H2O
