Question

Write the equation for:

Preparation of ethanol by hydration of C2H4

Open in App
Solution

Hydration reactions are addition reactions where water reacts with an unsaturated compound to produce alcohol.

For the reaction given in the question, Ethene(C2H4) reacts with water vapor in presence of catalysts such as Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) or Phosphorous pentaoxide (P2O5) at a high temperature and pressure to produce Ethanol(C2H5OH). The chemical reaction of the process is as illustrated below:

C2H4(g)(Ethene)+H2O(g)(Water)catalyst300°CC2H5OH(l)(Ethanol)

The reaction is reversible, and the formation of the Ethanol is highly exothermic.
