Question

Write the equation for the laboratory preparation of Ethyne from Calcium carbide.

Open in App
Solution

Definition of hydrolysis:

The breaking of a bond and the addition of the hydrogen cation and the hydroxide anion of water are all part of the chemical breakdown process.

Laboratory preparation of Ethyne from Calcium carbide :

Hydrolysis of Calcium carbide(CaC2)

When Calcium carbide is added to water, Acetylene(C2H2) and Calcium hydroxide are formed.

The chemical equation is

CaC2(s)Calciumcarbide+H2O(l)WaterC2H2(g)Ethyne+Ca(OH)2(s)Calciumhydroxide.

Therefore, hydrolysis of Calcium carbide produces Calcium hydroxide(CaOH2) and Acetylene or Ethyne are the products.
