Question

Write the equation for the laboratory preparation of the following salt using sulphuric acid: Copper sulphate From Copper

Open in App
Solution

  1. When copper metal (Cu) reacts with hot and concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4), it forms cyan blue colored copper sulphate (CuSO4) which is a soluble salt, water (H2O), and sulphur dioxide (SO2).
  2. As Cu is less reactive than hydrogen in an electrochemical series, thus Cu cannot displace H of dilute sulphuric acid.
  3. But concentrated sulphuric acid is a strong oxidizing agent, thus it oxidizes Cu.
  4. Hence, it is a redox reaction.
  5. The chemical equation :

Cu(s)+2H2SO4(aq)CuSO4(aq)+SO2(g)+2H2O(l)
