Question

Write the equation of the reaction taking place at the cathode and when acidified water is hydrolysed?

Open in App
Solution

  • When acidified water undergoes electrolysis Hydrogen ions and Hydroxyl ions are produced.

H2O2H++OH-

  • These further participate in oxidation and reduction reactions by the passage of electricity.
  • Hydrogen ions undergo reduction at the cathode electrode to produce Hydrogen gas.
  • While the Hydroxyl ions undergo oxidation at the anode to produce oxygen gas.
  • So the Cathode and Anode reaction is,

Cathode:2H+Hydrogenion+2e-H2Hydrogengas

Anode: 2OH-HydroxylionH2O+O2Oxygen+2e-
