Question

Write the equations for the controlled oxidation of methane to form the formaldehyde.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Introduction

Methane (CH4) gives different types of oxidation reaction which depends on experimental conditions like temperature, pressure, catalyst, and moles of reactant.

Step 2: Oxidation of Methane to Formaldehyde:

Methane (CH4) and Oxygen (O2) reacts in the presence of Molybdenum oxide (Mo2O3) at high temperature to form Formaldehyde (HCHO).

The chemical reaction that takes place is :

CH4+O2Mo2O3HCHO(Methane)(Oxygen)(Formaldehyde)
