Human digestive system:

  1. It is a group of organs that involve in the process of digestion.
  2. The main organs of the digestive system are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.

Mouth and salivary gland

  1. It receives food, masticates it into minute pieces, and then combines it with saliva.
  2. Saliva moistens and lubricates food

Esophagus:

It conducts food bolus from the mouth to the stomach.

Stomach:

Its functions are to store, dissolve and partially digest the food particles.

Pancreas:

  1. It regulates blood glucose levels.
  2. Proteases cleave proteins.
  3. Amylases cleave starch and glycogen
  4. Lipases cleave lipids
  5. Nuclease cleaves nucleic acids.

Liver:

  1. Stores fat-soluble vitamins and iron.
  2. It produces bile which is needed for the emulsification and absorption of lipids in the small intestine.

Gall bladder:

Stores bile

Small intestine:

It is the site where most digestion and absorption takes place.

Large intestine:

  1. It absorbs water, salts, and some vitamins.
  2. It stores undigestible material until it is eliminated from the anus.

Appendix:

It contains the cells of the immune system

Rectum:

The rectum holds excrement until a person is prepared to discharge.

Anus:

It controls the expulsion of waste material from the body.
