(i) (4000000)3

Solution

(i) First we write the number (within the brackets) in scientific notation.
4000000=4.0×106
Now, raising to the power 3 on both sides we get,
(4000000)3=(4.0×106)3=(4.0)3×(106)3
=64×1018=6.4×101×1018=6.4×1019
(ii) In scientific notation,
5000=5.0×103 and 200=2.0×102
(5000)4×(200)3=(5.0×103)4(2.0×102)3
=(5.0)4×(103)4×(2.0)3×(102)3
=625×1012×8×106=5000×1018
=5.0×103×1018=5.0×1021
(iii) In scientific notation, 0.00003=3.0×105
(0.00003)5=(3.0×105)5=(3.0)5×(105)5
=243×1025=2.43×102×1025=2.43×1023
(iv) In scientific notation,
2000=2.0×103 and 0.0001=1.0×104
(2000)2÷(0.0001)4=(2.0×103)2(1.0×104)4=(2.0)2×(103)2(1.0)4×(104)4
=4×1061016=4.0×106(16)=4.0×1022
