Question

Write the formula for refraction of light on spherical (concave or convex) surface. Establish lens formula 1f=(n1)[1R11R2] with its help. Symbols used have their usual meaning.

Solution

Considering refraction at first surface
X,P,Y First image in formed at image distance V1
μ1u+μ2v1=μ2μ1R1......(1)
For second surface X P2 Y object distance is V1 image distance is V
μ2v1+μ1v=μ1μ2R2=μ2μ1R2.......(2)
Adding (1) & (2)
1v1u=(μ2μ1)μ1[1R11R2]
But 1v1u=1f ;μ2μ1=μ
1f=(μ1)[1R11R2]
