Write the formulae of chlorides of Eka-silicon and Eka-aluminium, the elements predicted by Mendeleev.

Solution

Step 1: Mendeleev's periodic table:

Mendeleev placed the elements which were known at that time in the order of their increasing atomic masses.

Step 2:

Explanation:

Germanium (Ge) is known as Eka-silicon. It belongs to group number 4 in Mendeleev’s periodic table which means 4 electrons are present in the valence shell. Therefore the valency of Germanium (Ge) is 4. The formula for its chloride is GeCl4.

Gallium is called eka-aluminum (Ga). It belongs to Mendeleev’s periodic table’s group 3. So, it has 3 valence electrons and hence has a valency of 3. The formula for its chloride is GaCl3.

The formulae in the form of Eka-silicon and Eka-aluminium are given as ECl4andECl3respectively.
