Solution

Digestive System:

  • The digestive system refers to the collection of hollow organs that are responsible for moving and digesting the food into the body.
  • It involves the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.

Peristalsis:

  • Peristalsis is a mechanical and spontaneous muscular action of the digestive tract.
  • The muscles' contraction in the digestive tract walls and their relaxation create a movement in the digestive tract known as peristalsis.

Function:

  • Peristalsis created by the muscle contraction facilitates food movement downwards via the esophagus to the stomach.
  • Peristalsis propels the food downwards in the bolus form.
  • The stomach converts the food into chyme form.
  • Peristasis also facilitates the movement of chyme towards the small intestine.
