These cells are those which divide repeatedly and helps plants in many ways. Their purpose is to make new tissues, helps plant to repair tissues which are injured in any manner and so on. These are of two types:- Primary and Secondary. (with function)

Primary meristematic tissue include apical and intercalary tissue.
a)Apical meristem is situated at the tip of root and shoot which helps in growth of plant further.

b) Intercalary helps in increasing internodes of plant like in sugarcane. It also helps in growth of grass when upper portion is eaten by cow.

c) Lateral is Secondary meristem because it comes after and not from starting of plant life. It helps in growth and development of plant’s shoot girth.

Meristematic tissue are virus free area due to repetitive division.

When meristematic tissues losts their ability to divide then they are converted in to permanent tisse. Then those permanent tissues helps in plant growth and making specialised tissues. Further permanent tissues are divided in two categories.
