Write the importance of HCl in our digestive system. What happens if excess acid is produced? [2 Marks]

1. Our stomach produces gastric juice which contains a large amount of HCl (pH about 1.4). [0.5 Marks]
2. The acid does not harm the stomach wall because of the protective mucus layer, but kills germs and bacteria which enter our digestive system along with food, thus in a way it protects us from diseases and helps in digestion. [0.5 Marks]
3. Stomach acid stimulates the inactive enzymes secreted in the stomach which helps in the chemical digestion of food. [0.5 Marks]
4. Sometimes excess acid is produced in the stomach due to overeating, eating spicy foods, or due to irregular food habits. This stage is called acidity which causes gastritis. [0.5 Marks]
