Question

Write the ionisation reaction of sulphuric acid showing the formation of hydronium ion.

Open in App
Solution

Sulphuric acid is a strong acid and when dissolved in water it produces hydronium (H3O+) ions. It dissociates in two steps as shown below,
H2SO4+H2OH3O++HSO4
HSO4+H2OH3O++SO24
These reactions indicate that one molecule of sulphuric acid produces two hydronium (H3O+) ions.
