The mechanism of the reaction of HI with methoxymethane is shown below:
Fist step is the protonation of methoxymethane. Second step is the nucleophilic attack of iodide ion to form iodomethane and methanol.
If HI is present in excess and if temperature is high, methanol reacts with HI to form methyl iodide.
