Solution

The yield of crops has increased multiple times ever since chemicals like fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides have been used.

  • The chemicals that increase the food production can be divided into three categories:
  1. Fertilisers
  2. Insecticides
  3. Pesticides

(1) Fertilisers: Fertilizers are chemicals that enhance food production by providing nutrients to the soil which help in the growth of plants and produce a better yield. As plants grow, they need nutrients to grow in a proper manner which is obtained from the fertilisers.

  • Examples: Potash fertiliser is rich in Potassium (K), nitrogenous fertilisers have a large quantity of Nitrogen (N) and phosphatic fertiliser is rich in Phosphorous (P). These are required by the plants for their growth.

(2) Insecticides: Insecticides are the chemicals that enhance food production by killing, harming, or repelling the insects that damage the crops. This lead to a better yield of crops as now less number of plants are damaged by the insects.

  • Examples: Malathion, Bordeaux mixture.

(3) Pesticides: Pesticides are chemical substances that are meant to kill pests. A pesticide works by deterring or killing the pests.

  • Pests: An organism that damages cultivated plants or plant products or makes them unfit for human consumption is known as a pest.
  • Examples of pesticides: Malathion, Copper sulphate (CuSO4)
