Carl Linnaeus:

Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish zoologist, physician, and botanist discovered the binomial nomenclature which is a naming system to classify species in a systematic order.

The two important books written by Linnaeus are :

Species Plantarum -

  1. This book was published in 1753, in which he vividly described thousands of plant species.
  2. It was the first book in botanical sciences to include binomial nomenclature for classifying the plants and other members of kingdom Plantae.

System Naturae -

  1. This book was published in 1758.
  2. In this book he outlined his ideas for the hierarchical classification of the natural world and listed about 6,000 different species of plants and 4,236 species of animals.
  3. Binomial nomenclature was introduced for the first time through this book but it was called the Linnean nomenclature at that time.
