Libya was for long under the brutal dictatorship of Colonel Gaddafi. Gaddafi suppressed all opposition to his regime and denied the citizens of Libya basis fundamental rights like freedom of expression. Many opposition leaders were killed by Gaddafi. Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. But ever since, Libya has been in the grip of a civil war. The country has been wrecked by war and violence.
