Question

Write the observations and balanced equation of the following reaction:

Excess ammonium hydroxide is added to a substance obtained by adding hydrochloric acid in silver nitrate solution.

Open in App
Solution

  1. In the reaction of Silver nitrate(AgNO3) to Hydrochloric acid(HCl), a white precipitate of Silver chloride(AgCl) is obtained.
  2. The precipitate of Silver chloride is readily soluble in Ammonium hydroxide(NH4OH).
  3. So a white precipitate is obtained and is readily soluble in water.
  4. The equation for this reaction is,

AgNO3(s)Silvernitrate+HCl(l)Hydrochloricacid→AgCl(s)Silverchloride+HNO3(l)NitricacidAgCl(s)+2NH4OH(aq)Ammoniumhydroxide→[Ag(NH3)2]Cl(ppt.)+2H2O(l)
