Solution

DISPERSION OF WHITE LIGHT:

  1. If we allow a narrow beam of white light e.g., sunlight to fall on one face of a glass prism and Place a white sheet of paper on the other side of the prism. A band of seven colours is seen on the paper.
  2. The seven colours seen on the paper are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red, (VIBGYOR).
  3. The band of seven colours formed on the paper screen due to the dispersion of white light is called the spectrum of white light.
  4. Thus, we can say that white light (or sunlight) is made up of seven colours.

Hence, violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red, (VIBGYOR) is the order in which different colours appear in the spectrum of white light.
